A 30-Minute Workout Was Linked to Better Memory After Short Sleep

In a controlled study of 88 healthy young adults, 30 minutes of moderate evening cycling was associated with next-morning memory performance comparable to that seen after a full night of sleep, even when participants slept for only 4.5 hours. The findings, published in SLEEP, remain subject to confirmation in larger and more diverse studies.

A single 30-minute session of moderate evening exercise was associated with better next-morning memory after a night of restricted sleep in a controlled laboratory study of 88 healthy young adults.

The research, published in SLEEP, examined whether exercise could reduce the memory effects of sleeping for only part of the night. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions: 8.5 hours of sleep without exercise, 4.5 hours of sleep without exercise, 8.5 hours of sleep with exercise, or 4.5 hours of sleep with exercise.

Before the sleep period, each participant studied 80 face-name pairs. Those in the exercise groups completed 30 minutes on a stationary bicycle, including a five-minute warm-up and cool-down. The comparison groups sat quietly for 40 minutes. Participants then either slept from 11 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. or from 2 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.

Researchers monitored brain waves, eye movements and heart activity overnight using electrodes. The next morning, participants completed a recognition test containing the 80 previously studied pairs and 40 new ones.

The groups performed similarly immediately after learning the face-name pairs, but differences appeared after sleep. Participants who exercised before the shortened sleep period performed statistically as well on the delayed memory test as participants who received 8.5 hours of sleep without exercise. Those who had restricted sleep without exercising showed the expected decline in memory performance.

The study focused on declarative memory—the ability to retain and recall learned information. The researchers reported that slow-wave sleep, the deepest sleep stage measured in the experiment, moderated the exercise-related effect. Participants who naturally spent more time in slow-wave sleep, or had a higher proportion of it, experienced a stronger memory benefit associated with exercise.

The findings suggest that the workout was linked specifically to the overnight stabilization of newly learned memories rather than to differences in initial learning. However, the results do not establish that exercise eliminates the broader effects of insufficient sleep, nor do they show that the same pattern would occur in other populations or under everyday conditions.

The study was a tightly controlled experiment involving healthy young adults, and the report said the findings would need to hold up in larger, more diverse, real-world research. Its authors described evening moderate exercise as a possible way to buffer memory impairment during short sleep, rather than as a replacement for adequate sleep.
