Study Explores How ADHD-Linked Attention Patterns May Support Creativity
A 2026 iScience paper from Constructor University examines the overlap between ADHD-related attention patterns and creative thinking. The researchers propose that defocused attention may help generate unusual connections, while creative activities could offer structured ways to engage attention-control systems—but the paper does not establish a clinical treatment benefit.

A paper published in iScience is examining whether attention patterns associated with ADHD may also contribute to creative thinking. The work, led by Constructor University neuroscientist Radwa Khalil and co-authored by researchers from French research institutions, explores the overlap between attention and creativity rather than reporting results from a new clinical trial.
The paper, titled “Attention Unleashed: Creative Therapy for Thoughtful Transformation,” focuses on what the researchers describe as “defocused attention.” In the framework presented, people with ADHD may take in more information at once and move more readily among ideas. That broader attentional field can make tasks requiring sustained focus and impulse control more difficult, while also supporting free association and unexpected combinations of ideas.
The authors connect these patterns to creative thinking, including the generation of novel insights. ScienceDaily’s report describes the relationship through Khalil’s “spotlight” analogy: focused attention narrows onto a particular target, while ADHD-associated attention may function as a wider spotlight. The researchers do not present this as an across-the-board advantage. The same tendency toward mind-wandering or distractibility can be challenging when a task demands concentration on a single goal.
The paper also proposes that creative activities—including art, music, dance, writing and gaming—could provide structured ways to direct this type of attention. The researchers suggest that creative engagement may involve neural systems related to attention control, and could potentially help strengthen systems involved in focus and self-control. Those ideas are presented as a basis for future research and as a possible direction for non-pharmacological approaches, not as evidence that creative activities treat ADHD.
Khalil and her colleagues argue that ADHD is often viewed primarily through the lens of impairment, and that this can obscure variation in how attention-related traits operate. Their approach emphasizes that a pattern that creates difficulties in one setting may support exploration or idea generation in another. The report references artists and innovators associated with ADHD traits, but such examples do not establish a causal relationship between ADHD and creative achievement.
The researchers say the connection between creativity and attention remains incompletely understood. They call for interdisciplinary work involving neuroscientists, art therapists, clinicians and other specialists, along with new research methods and longitudinal studies that follow changes over time. These studies would be needed to determine when creative approaches might be useful and whether they can complement existing ADHD interventions. The current paper therefore offers a research framework and interpretation of overlapping attention and creativity processes, rather than demonstrating improved focus or creativity in people with ADHD.
