Study Links Prolonged Exhalation With Riskier Choices in 41 Adults
A study of 41 healthy participants found that slow breathing with an extended exhalation was associated with greater heart-rate variability, stronger activity in reward-related brain regions and more risk-taking during decision tasks. The findings suggest breathing patterns can influence how people weigh potential rewards, but they do not establish effects in clinical populations or everyday behavior.

Slow breathing with a prolonged exhalation was associated with bolder choices in a controlled study of 41 healthy adults, according to research from the German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbruecke and Charité — Universitätsmedizin Berlin. The findings, published in Neuron, connected the breathing pattern with changes in heart activity and increased brain responsiveness to potential rewards.
Participants completed risk-related decision tasks while following visual instructions for either their normal individual breathing pace or a slower pattern with an extended exhalation. In the longer-exhalation condition, the inhale-to-exhale ratio was 2:8. Researchers monitored breathing, heart activity, skin conductance and pupil responses while using functional magnetic resonance imaging to track brain activity.
The extended exhalation slowed participants’ heart rates and was associated with riskier choices. The shift appeared to reflect greater attention to possible rewards rather than a reduced response to losses: participants continued to react to losses in a similar way under both breathing conditions.
The researchers also observed stronger activity in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex and the precuneus. The results are consistent with “neurovisceral” models, which examine how signals from the body can influence brain activity and cognitive processes.
The study was led by Soyoung Q. Park, in collaboration with researchers from several institutions, including the Neuroscience Research Center at Charité, Freie Universität Berlin and the German Naval Institute of Maritime Medicine. Lead author Wenhao Huang said the findings point to an interaction between breathing and cardiac dynamics that may make the brain more receptive to rewards.
The researchers suggested that controlled breathing could eventually be studied as a self-regulation technique or as a supportive, non-pharmacological approach in clinical settings. They specifically identified anxiety disorders and depression as areas for possible future research because those conditions can involve disrupted autonomic regulation and altered responses to reward. The current study, however, involved healthy participants and did not test clinical outcomes.
The team also plans to investigate whether similar effects occur in broader populations, including people with overweight, and whether breathing patterns influence food-related decisions. Those proposed applications remain research questions rather than demonstrated benefits.
