Sleep Research Challenges the One-Size-Fits-All Eight-Hour Rule

A narrative review in Brain Medicine highlights evidence that optimal sleep duration varies among people and may often fall below eight hours. Research also suggests that sleep timing, regularity and total sleep across the week are important—but the health effects of longer sleep remain difficult to interpret.

The traditional eight-hour sleep target may be too narrow for many adults, according to a narrative review in Brain Medicine that examines evidence on natural sleep duration, health outcomes and sleep timing.

The review points to research in hunter-gatherer communities in Tanzania, Namibia and Bolivia, where participants were reported to sleep between 5.7 and 7.1 hours per night. The groups had little or no access to artificial light, did not appear to compensate with long daytime naps and generally woke close to dawn without alarm clocks. A more recent analysis estimated average sleep in preindustrial societies at 6.4 hours.

Those findings do not establish that shorter sleep is universally sufficient. The researchers noted that such studies assume the amount people naturally sleep is the amount they require. It is also unclear whether people in these communities experience the same health problems associated with insufficient sleep in industrialized societies, or whether they are free from pressures that affect sleep.

Evidence from modern populations offers a different way to estimate an “optimal” duration: examining how sleep length relates to health. One recent study used brain and body scans along with molecular measures to assess connections between sleep and the aging of different organs. Its estimated optimal range was 6.4 to 7.8 hours, depending on a person’s sex and the organ being studied.

Large studies have also linked both shorter and longer sleep with poorer health outcomes, including heart disease, stroke, cognitive decline and obesity. However, the review emphasized that researchers still debate whether longer sleep contributes to poor health or instead signals an existing health problem. These studies therefore challenge the idea of a universal eight-hour requirement without establishing a single ideal duration for everyone.

Sleep needs vary with age and between individuals. When given sufficient opportunity, young adults tend to sleep longer than healthy older adults, while people of the same age can still require different amounts. The U.S. National Sleep Foundation recommends seven to nine hours for adults aged 26 to 64, while noting that six to ten hours may be appropriate for some adults.

The review also argues that sleep quality cannot be reduced to duration. Artificial light can delay the body clock and shift sleep later relative to the natural light-dark cycle. Irregular sleep is associated with poorer health, particularly among shift workers and university students. At the same time, catching up on lost sleep during days off appears better than not catching up, even if it makes sleep patterns less regular.

Taken together, the evidence suggests that sleep duration, timing and consistency all matter, while the occasional poor night need not be treated as evidence of a problem.
