Teen Sleep Schedule Mismatch Linked to Slightly Higher Anxiety
A systematic review and meta-analysis of adolescent sleep research found a small but consistent association between greater “social jet lag”—different sleep schedules on weekdays and weekends—and higher reported anxiety. The analysis combined 12 studies involving more than 230,000 participants, but it does not establish that irregular sleep timing causes anxiety.

A systematic review and meta-analysis has found a small but consistent association between “social jet lag” in teenagers and higher reported anxiety. The term refers to the gap between weekday and weekend sleep schedules, such as sleeping and waking later on weekends than during the school week.
The findings, reported by Medical Xpress from research published in Sleep Medicine Reviews, came from a review of 18 studies. Researchers combined the results of 12 sufficiently similar studies involving more than 230,000 participants.
Across those studies, adolescents with greater differences between their weekday and weekend sleep timing were more likely to report higher anxiety levels. The relationship also appeared in the reverse direction: higher anxiety was associated with greater social jet lag. The correlation was small, but the overall pattern was consistent across the studies included in the meta-analysis.
The research team was based at the University of Southampton. Sarah Chellappa, a co-author, said that puberty typically shifts teenagers’ internal body clocks later, meaning they naturally tend to feel sleepy later and prefer waking later. Early school schedules and other time demands can make it difficult to follow that preferred timing during the week, potentially leading some teenagers to sleep longer on weekends.
The study’s design is important when interpreting the result. This was a systematic review and meta-analysis of existing research, not a new intervention trial. The association does not show that social jet lag causes anxiety, or that anxiety necessarily causes changes in sleep timing. The source material also describes the relationship as small, despite its consistency across the analyzed studies.
The authors said the findings point to sleep regularity and the wider conditions shaping adolescent sleep as relevant areas for consideration. Hannah Ravenhall, lead author of the paper, emphasized that sleep patterns are influenced not only by individual choices but also by factors such as school start times and the biological changes of adolescence.

It does not, however, establish a specific bedtime schedule as a treatment for anxiety or demonstrate that changing school start times would improve anxiety outcomes.
