Ten Minutes of Very Slow Running Linked to Better Mood and Executive Function

Ten minutes of very slow running was followed by improvements in mood and executive function in a study that used treadmill exercise and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to examine brain activity.

The research, published in Imaging Neuroscience, focused on running at approximately 3–6 kilometers per hour, or about 2–4 miles per hour. That pace is close to walking and represented roughly 35% of peak oxygen uptake, making it a very light-intensity activity.

After completing the 10-minute session, participants recorded a more pleasant mood and had a shorter Stroop interference time. The Stroop task is used to assess executive function, including the ability to manage competing information and responses.

Brain measurements taken with fNIRS showed increased activity in prefrontal regions associated with executive function and mood regulation. The strongest changes were reported in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and left frontopolar cortex.

The researchers also examined the movement produced by running itself. Greater vertical movement of the head—the gentle up-and-down oscillation characteristic of running—was associated with larger improvements in mood. This was an association within the study, rather than evidence that head movement independently caused the mood change.

The findings address a gap in exercise research, much of which has used cycling because laboratory researchers can precisely control its intensity.
